Driveway Cleaning Best Practices

By admin | Cleaning & Upkeep | Comments are Closed | 29 November, 2017 | 4

1. Best practices to extend the life of your driveway.

Driveway cleaning is an integral part of extending the life of your driveway, regardless of material. Should you choose concrete, asphalt, interlocking brick pavers, or another material type, it is important to know the proper cleaning technique. Each material has a specific technique to help you effectively and effortlessly complete the job at hand.

One of the most common questions we are asked at Bell Paving is how to get grease spots out of a driveway or parking lot. Depending on the material, be it asphalt or concrete, there are several options to help alleviate these problematic stains. For a concrete driveway, dishwashing liquid or even cola can help eliminate grease spots. Saturate the stain with soda, leave overnight, and use a brush and warm soapy water to lift the stain away easily. Asphalt will require a different technique. Bleach, baking soda, or trisodium phosphate will help to remove stains. Simply apply the compound, and use a stiff bristle broom to scrub the stain out.

For simple dirt and debris on your driveway, a pressure washer is far and away the most effective and efficient tool for the job. Use caution if you have not removed surface stains however, as the pressure caused by the machine will force stains deeper into the driveway. It is recommended to apply a protective coating to clean your driveway once it is finished, or schedule a survey of the driveway to determine if it is the right time to sealcoat and refresh your look.

Proper maintenance will extend the life of your driveway, and avoid costly repairs such a complete removal and replacement, or needing to resurface the driveway before its time has come.
